If you hear the word bingo you automatically think winner. Bingo history this decade has evolved from Catholic Church basements and senior citizen centers. It is a fun family game that can be played almost anywhere from school to on line.
The origination of the game Bingo is said to have come from Italy in a version of their lottery called Lo Giuoco del Lotto D’Itallia amidst the 1530′s. It has evolved over the years but its roots come from this version yet changed formats several times. What has not changed is it’s popularity with millions of people.
It was also related to a game called “Beno” that was played in Europe. During the twentieth century Europeans would go to carnivals and play Beno. There they would each have a small card with numbers on it and cover the numbers with beans. When they covered all their cards the winner would yell ‘Beno’.
A toy manufacturer in’29 named Ed Lowe heard about the popular carnival game and decided to create a game of his own Beno version at home. One of his players around the table in the excitement of winning shouted ‘bingo’ instead of ‘beno’ and the name stuck in America to this day.
Lowe charged a dollar to those who used the name Bingo and became a very wealthy man. But he was unsuccessful at patenting the game of bingo which came in later years. However he is still credited with bringing the popular game to America.
The New York Times called Americans game-minded as Bingo spread across the nation in’35. It soon grew to be the favorite pastime of many communities. Different styles of patterns were created including the still popular game of black out, where you can black out all the numbers on your card to win.
Bingo has made its way to fundraising more than Catholic Churches. Throughout the country groups choose to hold bingo games to raise money for various causes and organizations. They enjoy the fun game of chance and are helping out a worthy cause while having fun.
Now you don’t even have to leave home to play. Bingo games are popping up all over the internet and have grown in popularity there too. You can play with people all over the world and chat while you do. You can play for prizes or cash on some sites.
The ever popular game of bingo is here to stay. But no matter how bingo history this decade has changed one thing remains the same; it is just a really fun game to play. Our curiosity sparks and our hearts beat as we wait for the last of our numbers to be called so we can yell “BINGO”!
